Dr Türmen started her professional life as a clinician, academic and researcher and then moved to public health with a particular focus on strengthening health systems and programs in resource-poor settings. She is a strong advocate of women’s health, gender equality and human rights with a special focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights. She has extensive experience in health policy development, planning and implementation. She has built partnerships with different constituencies to work towards a common objective. She is a creative and successful fundraiser with a broad global network. She has worked in a wide range of settings in developing and developed countries in both national and international environments. Respect for diversity and intercultural sensitivity have been fundamental components of her professional activities. She has been instrumental in expanding NGO participation including women’s health advocacy groups in the policy development process within WHO. She is a leading figure in key health professional and women's associations and the author and co-author of many scientific papers and books.
 
She is married to Dr. Rıza Türmen, former Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, now a member of the Parliament   and has one daughter and one grandson.
