Turkeyís first Ombudsperson responsible for children had her first NGO visit to International Childrenís Center (ICC)

Ombudsperson Ms Serpil «akżn and two of her staff members Ms Berna Suer and Mr ›lker ÷zcan visited ICC on 11 April 2013. This was her first NGO visit in Turkey. Ms Cakin and her team met with ICCís management and programme staff to discuss how both organisations may strengthen each otherís work in helping progress childrenís rights in Turkey.

ICC pointed out to the Ombudsperson that children encounter significant problems in using the judicial system to protect their rights or to seek remedies for violations of their rights; and children's access to organisations that are supposed to protect their rights are generally limited.

The ombudsperson accepts complaints that are brought to the institution after the child has exhausted all other administrative avenues. For ICC, the application procedure could be problematic and overly bureaucratic as cases work their way through lower levels of administration without providing children direct recourse to the ombudsperson.

ICC also pointed out that the new system needs to be explained clearly to the children with child friendly information about how to make complaints.

Ombudsperson Ms Cakin and her teamís visit is concluded with a pledge for the Ombudsperson and ICC to support each otherís work  to promote childrenís exercise of their rights.
