What ICC has done to commemorate 20 November the International Day for the Rights of the Child?

What ICC has done to commemorate 20 November the International Day for the Rights of the Child?

ICC stretched its activities throughout the whole month of November in 2012. We started off with joining Women's World Summit Foundation’s 19 Days of Activism for 19 November International Day to prevent abuse and violence against children.

This year we used social online media, especially Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, in order to reach out wider audience, especially children and young people.

On 17 November ICC joined UNICEF Turkey and Union of Turkish Bar Associations for their annual evaluation and coordination meeting for children’s rights committees of bar associations in 81 provinces. ICC shared how a child rights based children’s strategy at the national level should look like with examples from Draft National Child Rights Strategy of Turkey and Draft National Plan of Action to Combat Violence against Children.

On 20 November, together with International Coalition for the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on a Communications Procedure of which ICC is a member and Ankara Bar Association Child Rights Centre, ICC organized a seminar on Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (OPCRC) on a Communications Procedure (also called OP3 CRC) to inform NGOs in Turkey about this new international mechanism and motivate them to work together for Turkey to ratify this optional protocol. The Co-Chair of the International Coalition Ms Anita Goh introduced the OP3CRC to NGO representatives.

Turkey signed the OP3CRC on 24 September 2012.

ICC also launched its YouTube Channel called ICC Child Rights TV on 20 November.  ICC Child Rights TV has started its broadcast with expert interviews in Turkish and English. You can reach the Child Rights TV at http://www.youtube.com/ICCcocukhaklariTV.

On 21 November Turkish Radio and Television’s TRT Anatolia TV hosted ICC and ICC’s Children’s Advisory Group on the Programme called Colours of Life. A half hour interview included issues like fundamentals of children’s rights, children’s right to freedom from violence, and early/forced marriages.

As a sign of its commitment to fighting commercial sexual exploitation, together ECPAT International of which ICC is a member and Turkish NGO Network to Combat Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), ICC published a poster to inform public on early/forced marriages. The poster was designed by Praksis Medya as a volunteer contribution to the work of Turkish NGO Network to Combat CSEC.

ICC with Bilkent University Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture Department of Graphic Design launches a poster exhibition created by the 3rd year students on the theme of “Child Brides.” Exhibition will open on 22nd November, Thursday at 11:00 am. The exhibition can be visited until 22nd December 2012.

ICC concludes its 20 November the International Day for the Rights of the Child activities by contributing to the Council of Europe conference on “Stepping up progress in combating violence against children” which will take place on 27-28 November 2012 in Ankara. This conference is organised in cooperation with UNICEF, the Turkish authorities and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General on Violence against Children. ICC’s contribution to the Conference will be on indicators and monitoring violence against children.
