National Volunteerism Summit, April 30, 2017

Ýhsan Doðramacý Bilkent University “Social Awareness Projects” (TDP- a student volunteer organization) and International Children’s Center (ICC) hosted National Volunteerism Summit on April 30, 2017, at Bilkent Hotel, Ankara with the participation of many high school and university students.

TDP and ICC highlighted the importance of early and forced marriages and said: “DON’T LET THEM GO AS BRIDES”.

TDP and ICC drew attention to the fact that early and forced marriages constitute negligence and abuse of the child, and also reminded everyone that the first article of the UN Convention on the Child - which Turkey has signed and is therefore obliged to observe – declares that “every human being below the age of 18 is a CHILD and compelling children to marry is a violation of their rights.

The meeting hosted approximately 300 participants including 100 university students from different universities outside of Ankara.  During the meeting, the topic, “Early and Forced Marriages”, was discussed and reviewed in different aspects and affects such as physical and mental health and in different perspectives of many experts from the field.

The Meeting also included legal aspects of “Early and Forced Marriages, and children and young people found opportunity to express their views on the subject. The meeting also hosted micro projects which were implemented by high school students – the micro projects were sub-granted under “Strengthening existing networks for child rights - linking international to national and local” project which is implemented by the ICC and financially supported by Delegation of the European Union to Turkey. These micro projects aimed at supporting children for “children’s right to freedom from violence and children’s participation”.
